Cape Town — Former President, Thabo Mbeki, has criticised his presidential successor, Jacob Zuma and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, saying it is led and run by the same people who tried to ruin the South African Revenue Services (SARS).
Mbeki was speaking at the annual lecture at the University of South Africa (UNISA) where he lambasted Zuma for his comments about the ANC prior to forming the MK party. Zuma said he could not vote for “Ramaphosa’s ANC” and said he would remain a member of the party, while campaigning for MK party. This decision led to his expulsion from the party.
Mbeki said it was a contradiction and a fallacy that anyone could be a member of the governing ANC, campaign for another party and bay for the ANC’s removal from power, IOL reported.
“You can’t say I remain a member of the ANC, but I am going to support a party which is going to campaign to defeat the ANC. That doesn’t make sense. One of those two things is wrong,” said Mbeki.
He then added that the leaders of the MK party are the same people who tried to destroy SARS.
“In terms of these breakaways from the ANC take that breakaway, you can understand that. It is led by the same people who tried to destroy Sars. This is exactly the same people.” he said.
Mbeki also said it was important for all people, especially the youth, to be prepared and to know exactly who they are voting for and what they stand for, when it comes to the elections on 29 May/
As South Africans prepare to cast their votes on May 29, it’s important to know who they are voting for. That’s the view of former president Thabo Mbeki as he engaged with Unisa students and other dignitaries.
