Cape Town — African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, has laughed off Jacob Zuma’s claims that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party’s target of a two-thirds majority in the upcoming elections.
Mbalula was addressing a party rally in Msinga in KZN, where he touched on a range of topics the ANC intended to solve, which inlcluded brinign load shedding to an end, improving service delivery, and bringing an end to corruption.
He spoke candidly about Zuma establishing the new party. He said Zuma was “ambitious” to think he could amass such big numbers with the new party, failing to do so when he was in charge of the ANC, TimesLIVE reported.
“I hear them (MK Party) say they want two-thirds but how will he (Zuma) get it when he never gave us (ANC) — we last got it with Thabo Mbeki,” he said.

He likened Zuma to a father who grew up in the struggle, worked for liberation and then left his family, saying the ANC did not expect it and that they are forging ahead with their bid to retain political power in the upcoming elections.
Mbalula questioned the credibility of the members who left the ANC to join the MK party, saying they did so to get positions they could not within the party. He said fellow party members should not believe Zuma’s claims that MK was trying to “fix the ANC from the outside”
“He took the spear and left with it. You can’t leave to work with the enemy and then say you are fixing the ANC by stabbing us with this spear. The enemy is happy, they want us divided, that’s not a struggle. The organisation will always have challenges but you can’t desert it,” Mbalula explained.
The ANC is currently preparing for their manifesto launch on Saturday and plans to maintain its dominance ahead of the election. Mbalula told supports to not be ashamed of highlighting their wins.
“When we campaign don’t go as if there’s nothing you can tell the people — this election is do or die. The enemy says we did nothing but our history is evident — we have changed lives. The ANC is loved by people through its actions, if we work the people will never leave us for the enemy,” Mbalula said.
