Cape Town — City of Tshwane Mayor, Cilliers Brink, has come under fire from the African National Congress (ANC) after the party tabled a motion of no confidence against him.
Brink, who is a Democratic Alliance (DA) member, has received strong support from his party. The DA has said that Tshwane has made significant progress under Brink’s leadership, but the ANC has cited the city’s deterioration under Brink to warrant his removal. The DA said it is a threat from the ANC, allegedly linked to a waste contract, SABC News reported.
According to the City of Tshwane’s Finance MMC, Jacqui Uys, the metro has made good progress in improving its finances in the past year and highlighted two key infrastructure project improvements. She also said that addressing the city’s challenges is a priority.
“The City has got new top management and we are cultivating a new culture that is driven by performance and it is slowly taking hold. A lot of work has been done to ensure that our supply chain processes are being cleared up and that we offer fair processes and value for money for our residents,” she said.
Jacqui Uys, DA Tshwane chairperson, said the multiparty governing coalition is united and will vote against the motion of no confidence in Mayor Cilliers Brink.

Speaking on behalf of the ANC, regional chairperson Eugene Modise, said more than one hundred projects since the DA took control of the city and that jobs have not been completed, leaving the city looking crestfallen.
“As we speak there is a water problem in Mamelodi. For five years in Ikageng, there has been no water and the DA has been making videos every day saying that they will fix the water, but there is nothing that they are doing. We as the African National Congress have gone to the national government and requested them to assist us with the water in Hammanskraal,” Modise said.
Tshwane ANC Regional Secretary George Matjila says they are calling on Mayor Brink to step down. Matjila adds that they are calling on Mayor Brink to step down. Matjila says the DA-led administration is categorised by service delivery failures, prompting the ANC to call for the Mayor’s resignation.
As reported by The Citizen, Uys said that any political party that supports the motion of no confidence against Brink will be aiding the ANC in corruption and would undo all the work done in Tshwane. She said the mayor and the mayoral committee had been transparent in their challenges.
“While Tshwane is not yet perfect, our financial rescue mission is progressing and we are addressing issues such as unclean public spaces and dark streets,” she said.
Eugene Modise, ANC Tshwane Chairperson, said the party wants to remove Cilliers Brink only because he is “incompetent” at his job.

“Solving these problems is at the core of the Multi-Party Coalition’s agenda. The ANC lacks a legitimate case for a motion of no confidence in Mayor Brink. They offer no compelling alternative,” she said.
She said the mess in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni was a testament to the work done by the ANC.
Uys said the mess in Joburg and Ekurhuleni was a testament to what the ANC brought to the table.
“The ANC has yet to attempt a motion of no confidence, playing the role of opposition while trying to redeem itself in the eyes of the electorate, who are aware that Tshwane’s institutional decay is largely due to ANC interference,” she said.
Modise and Matjila said the ANC would do anything it can to remove Brink from his position and take back Tshwane.
“The ANC is calling for the resignation of Brink due to his level of incompetence in executing his duties. Since June 2023, we have witnessed the rapid deterioration of governance and political oversight management and the financial status of the city,” said Modise.
