Cape Town — Former Johannesburg mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda, said he will consider suing the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for loss of income after his fraud charges were dropped.
The NPA announced on Tuesday that the charges against Gwamanda and his co-accused, Mduduzi Zondo, were dropped after they were accused of defrauding Soweto residents through a funeral scheme. The NPA dropped the case against him as there was insufficient evidence to convict him.
“The case being provisionally withdrawn is on the basis of there being no evidence that points to the fact that I would have defrauded anyone. There is no solid case in point that they can use,” Gwamanda said.

According to EWN, Gwamanda said the charges levelled against him led to him losing his job as Johannesburg mayor and the MMC for Community Development. He wants to hold the NPA and elected officials accountable for the income loss during this time.
“I have lost a job, two jobs as a matter of fact. I have lost my reputation, I have been criminalised by the white monopoly capitalist establishment so it is only fair that I retaliate and like I said previously, everyone must account starting with the speaker of the council,” he said.
“The speaker of the council must be the first to account. The executive mayor must make a statement because he spoke about the gravity of the charges, I wonder if he had sight of the documents to begin with and I told him that there is no case here, it is just a character assassination plot,” he added.
