Cape Town – The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has redeployed its president, Velenkosini Hlabisa, to the National Assembly to fill a vacancy left by the death of the party’s founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The decision was made during the IFP’s national executive committee meeting.
Hlabisa had been the KwaZulu-Natal caucus leader and played a vital role in the party’s resurgence in the province.
“The IFP reiterates its confidence in president Hlabisa and wishes him well in his responsibilities as the IFP parliamentary leader,” the IFP said.
His responsibilities in the KZN Legislature caucus will be taken over by Blessed Gwala, the party’s provincial legislature chief whip. These changes are effective immediately.

The IFP also brought back its former secretary general, Reverend Musa Zondi, from retirement to join the KZN Legislature Caucus as a Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL).
The IFP aims to continue its legacy, unity, and prepare for the 2024 national and provincial elections.
Additionally, the IFP is in talks with the DA to form a united front against the ANC in the upcoming general elections, with the possibility of dislodging the ANC from power in KwaZulu-Natal.
