Cape Town — The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed the employee who leaked the ANC and MK party’s respective candidate lists, has been dismissed.
The commission conducted an internal investigation into the matter after the candidate lists were leaked onto social media, shortly after each party submitted it to the IEC on Friday. A subsequent investigation indicated the leak came from within the IEC’s ranks, EWN reported.
“The commission confirms that the implicated official’s contract with the commission has been terminated,” said the IEC’s chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo.
Mamabolo defended the credibility of the IEC despite the very early leak of sensitive information from within its own ranks, The Citizen said.
“The credibility of the commission is not dependent on a single factor [the leak]. The incident is revolting and ought not to have happened but that is not the totality of the credibility of the commission,” he said.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo has confirmed that a staff member implicated in the leaked ANC and MK Party candidates lists has been fired. Mamabolo says the staff member also downloaded information of other political parties.
