Cape Town —The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has revealed that 42 candidates appeared on more than one party list, with 39 parties implicated.
The IEC gave parties until 5pm yesterday to inform the commission whether any of their candidates appeared on the list of another party or as an independent candidate. The IEC found 42 in total, with 39 parties involved, while one of the candidates also appeared as an independent candidate, an IEC statement said.
The public may now inspect the lists of party and independent candidates. The lists will be available at the commission’s national, provincial and municipal offices between 09:00 and 17:00 today and tomorrow.

A total of 14 662 candidates have been nominated to contest the 887 seats available in the National Assembly and in the nine legislatures. 4 323 candidates are nominated for the contemporary seats in the National Assembly (NA) (parties only), with 3 596 candidate nominated for regional seats and 6 743 candidates for provincial seats (parties and independent candidates allowed).
The commission said any person may object the nomination of a candidate and must do so by 5pm on 27 March 2024. The commission will decide on any objections by 28 March 2024 and the objector, registered party or independent candidate may appeal the decision by 2 April 2024.
he commission is set to release the final list of candidates contesting the May 29 elections on April 10, 2024.
