Cape Town – Former Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda’s arrest on fraud charges has sparked calls for his removal under the ANC’s step-aside policy.
Gwamanda, now Johannesburg’s MMC for Community Development, voluntarily surrendered to authorities and was released on bail.
In a statement, Mayor Dada Morero said he plans to meet with Gwamanda on Tuesday to discuss the matter and emphasised the importance of preventing service delivery disruptions.
“As the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, I am deeply concerned by matter of the arrest of MMC Kabelo Gwamanda.

“The developments deserve to be handled with sense of urgency on behalf of the residence of the City in order to ensure that it doesn’t impact on the service delivery,” Morero said.
He added: “… As a deployee of the ANC in political office, we are guided by the ANC’s position on similar matters and cannot and do not expect any less from our partners in government.
“We can duly confirm that the situation meets the minimum requirements for the step aside rule to kick in.”
While the ANC’s policy requires members facing criminal charges to step aside, political pressure, including from ActionSA’s Herman Mashaba, urges immediate action without waiting for ANC procedures.
“He must not only resign as an MMC, he must resign as a Councillor with immediate effect. @Action4SA is going to act on this,” ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said on social media on Sunday.
