Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on South Africans to remain united and not allow international events to create division, as tensions between South Africa and the United States continue to rise.
In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa reflected on Human Rights Day, observed last Friday, urging South Africans to reject divisive politics that are increasingly taking root across the globe.
Relations between the two nations have deteriorated following US President Donald Trump’s decision to cut financial aid to South Africa over Pretoria’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) case against Israel and its ties with Iran.
Tensions escalated further after former South African ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for alleging that Trump and billionaire Elon Musk were leading a global white supremacist movement.
Ramaphosa reaffirmed that all South Africans—regardless of race, gender, or background—are entitled to equal rights and freedoms, which the state is committed to protecting and promoting.
He reaffirmed South Africa’s global stance on human rights and its solidarity with oppressed communities worldwide.
