Cape Town – Less than a week before the elections, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has welcomed back former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Nqaba Bhanga, who was previously a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
According to The Citizen, Bhanga, alongside Themba Mangqase and Eric Jinikwe, was presented at the ANC’s regional headquarters in Gqeberha.
His return to the ANC comes just before the national and provincial elections on 29 May, and he will now work for the ruling party in the Nelson Mandela Bay region, the report said.

Bhanga left the DA after his membership was terminated in December following accusations of racism against the DA’s federal council chairperson Helen Zille.
He was previously suspended from the DA in June 2023 and subsequently expelled after an investigation.
Bhanga, who has a political history with Cope and student organizations, was also involved in a fatal car accident on his 44th birthday in August 2021, which resulted in two deaths and influenced his decision not to seek re-election as the DA’s provincial leader.
