Cape Town – Former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse has stepped down as a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor.
A medical doctor by profession, Phalatse expressed her intention to re-enter the medical field.
She cited her experience and qualifications as a medical doctor as reasons for seeking to make a more meaningful and valuable contribution in healthcare.
She, however, remains a member of the DA.
“After months of in-depth reflection and consultation with my family, I have come to the conclusion that as a qualified medical doctor with vast experience in healthcare and beyond, I could make a better, meaningful and invaluable contribution elsewhere.
Yes it’s true! I will be back.
I’m sharing my resignation letter for your information. Lots of love ❤️ pic.twitter.com/iFZsDxCLWu

“As you may be aware, the healthcare space is unpredictable and medical emergencies are the order of the day.
“In a political environment where council meetings have become too frequent and irregular it would be impossible to move between healthcare and council activities without compromising one or the other,” said Phalatse.
She initially left her medical practice to enter politics in 2016, serving as a councillor for seven years and becoming mayor in 2021.
Her resignation is set to take effect on September 30, and she stressed that her decision should not be seen as a withdrawal from the DA or the end of her political career.
