Cape Town – Former Johannesburg mayor Kabelo Gwamanda is out on bail after surrendering to the police in connection with fraud charges related to a failed funeral policy scheme he allegedly ran in 2011 through his company, Ithemba Lama Afrika.
According to reports, Gwamanda allegedly sold funeral policies to Soweto residents, but when they sought to claim, they could not locate the company.
He was asked to present himself at the police station by the Hawks’ Commercial Crimes Division.

After appearing in court, he was released on bail while investigations continue.
Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks praised Gwamanda for cooperating with the authorities.
“The Hawks have been very fair in events leading up to Kabelo Gwamanda getting bail for allegations that 15 years ago there was R10 000 involved in a funeral scheme that went sour. And Al Jama-ah would like to congratulate councillor Gwamanda for his cooperation and his courage,” Hendricks said.
