Cape Town – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) organised a march to Joburg Water on Monday, 3 March 2025, to protest against ongoing water shedding in the City of Johannesburg.
The party cited issues like ageing infrastructure and high demand as the causes of water supply challenges.
EFF provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga condemned the restriction of water to residents, particularly those deemed in debt, and criticised the underutilisation of the city’s budget allocation for water services.
“The city of Johannesburg is saying the they’re not only restricting water to its citizens but they are actually cutting of water supply to the people they deem are in debt in the city of Joburg, so we are marching against that.
“We are also marching for the allocation of the 33% of the entire budget not being thoroughly used,” EWN quoted Dunga as saying.

Gauteng EFF spokesperson, Dumisani Baleni told SABC News that the party is calling for an end to “water shedding” following a rise in water supply disruptions, which the utility has linked to outdated infrastructure and increased demand.
“Part of the demands of the EFF is that there should be an end to water shedding. There should be an investment in the maintenance and expansion of the city’s infrastructure. There should be an investigation in terms of the skill set of the people that are serving in Joburg Water Board because we know right now that the ANC has used the water board as the institution to further entrench their patronage and party factions,” he said.
