Cape Town – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema called on the government to expedite the expropriation of land so that people displaced by the floods in KwaZulu-Natal can get decent houses.
Malema said this on Thursday when he visited eThekwini residents affected by the recent floods.
He was there to assess and provide assistance.
Malema took the opportunity to highlight the party’s ongoing fight for land.
He called on the eThekwini municipality to provide land to residents who have been displaced by the floods.
“We said to the municipality that WE NEED LAND, because if you go back there, the same thing will happen again,” said Malema, as quoted in a tweet by EFF.

In another tweet, the EFF quoted Malema as saying: “When we say that we want the land, there are people who say we want to destroy things. We don’t want to destroy anything; our people need a place to stay, & the floods have demonstrated that indeed we need the land, and the land issue is very urgent”.

The recent floods left at least 435 people dead and 40 000 homeless.

The floods also left several areas inaccessible – hampering the delivery of relief aid – after bridges and roads cracked under the weight of the raging flood waters.
The EFF was able to help those areas it visited by distributing blankets, food parcels, and R500 000 to a soup kitchen.
