Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance (DA) is reportedly set to receive six ministerial positions and four deputy positions in the government of national unity (GNU), including the influential role of leader of government business.
This comes as part of an agreement between the DA and the African National Congress (ANC), formalised through a Statement of Intent signed by ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula and DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille.
Citing City Press, a report by The Citizen said that the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) will get two ministerial positions and potentially one deputy minister position.
A source familiar with the negotiations told the paper that the agreement will extend to the provincial legislatures.
“For example, since the IFP got the premiership of KwaZulu-Natal, it will also get three MEC positions. The ANC got the position of Speaker; it will also get three MEC positions as the third-largest party in that province,” the source was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, government and law enforcement agencies have confirmed that all preparations are complete for the presidential inauguration at the Union Buildings on Wednesday, with global dignitaries expected to attend, eNCA reorted.
World leaders, including the US President, have sent congratulatory messages to President Cyril Ramaphosa, praising South Africa’s democratic process and Government of National Unity.
Following Ramaphosa’s inauguration, he will announce an inclusive Cabinet, Mbalula said.
“As has already been announced the president will be inaugurated on the 19th of June 2024 and thereafter will announce an inclusive [Government of National Unity] GNU Cabinet,” ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said on Saturday.
