Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has reportedly suspended Western Cape speaker Masizole Mnqasela from all part activities following allegations of corruption against him.
According to The Citizen, the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) met on Friday and came to a conclusion to suspend Mnqasela.
“The PEC’s decision to suspend is based on the findings of an investigation report by the DA’s Federal Legal Commission that there is sufficient credibility in the allegations relating to irregularities pertaining to subsistence, travel and entertainment allowance claims,” DA Western Cape chairperson Jaco Londt said, as quoted by the report.
The party issued a statement recently, saying that whistle-blowers had approached the Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, to report the allegations.
Winde asked the whistle-blowers to produce the evidence to back up the claims.
“The whistle-blowers recently approached the leader of the DA Provincial Caucus, Alan Winde, to report these allegations. Mr Winde requested them to make formal submissions, backed by supporting evidence. On Wednesday this week, the whistle-blowers duly submitted protected disclosures, with documentary evidence. They wish to remain anonymous, a request we respect.
“As required by the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, the DA has reported the matter to the Hawks for investigation, including the documentary evidence provided in the protected disclosures,” said the DA.
The DA further reported the matter to its Federal Legal Commission (FLC) for urgent investigation.
“Apart from escalating the matter to the Hawks, the DA has also reported the matter to its Federal Legal Commission (FLC) for urgent investigation. The Party will follow its internal disciplinary processes with deliberate speed to ensure accountability, while respecting Mr Mnqasela’s right to submit his defence in this matter,” said the DA.
The party said Mnqasela was given an opportunity to provide reasons why he should not be suspended, which he did, News24 reported.
However, after consideration, the party decided to suspend him.
The Hawks would pursue the investigation against Mnqasela and he could face disciplinary action from the DA, IOL said.
