Cape Town — The Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed concern over the recent shooting that occurred between a South African Police Services (SAPS) officer and a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) member.
The incident occurred in Dobsonville in Soweto after an off-duty JMPD officer, Linda Mthimkhulu was shot and killed on Saturday evening after her 27-year-old son failed to pull over a Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving recklessly. An argument between Mthimkulu and the SAPS officers ensued before she allegedly grabbed her firearm and fired shots at the SAPS officials, IOL reported.
SAPS officials fired back and killed Mthimkulu. The incident is now under investigation by the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (Ipid), as the metro police officer died as a result of police action.
In response to the incident, the DA’s Michael Sun said the party intends to make an inquiry to determine what the events were that led to the shooting, EWN reported.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family affected by this tragic incident. A thorough investigation must be conducted to uncover the truth. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the City of Johannesburg.” Sun said.
