Cape Town — The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KZN have launched an election campaign in an effort to to dissolve the eThekwini metro, saying the province’s only metro has collapsed.
The DA took to the streets to picket outside the council chambers, where party members and supporters came out in their numbers to support the party and their campaign. The DA reported on X that eThekwini residents are currently paying for services that they are not receiving, while dealing with an increased cost of living.
They also stated that eThekwini officials owe the municipality more than R52 million in water, electricity and rates.

According to eNCA, the DA officially announced the start of their election campaign and their desire to dissolve the metro council, saying there are issues with administration, financial management and service delivery.
“The municipality has collapsed they can’t provide basic services’ like water, keep the electricity on, roads ae collapsing. The spend on infrastructure has declined, the municipality and ANC-EFF coalition is more interested in spending money on alcohol and parties’ and concerts, and they’ve effectively given up.” Dean Macpherson, KZN provincial chairperson for the DA, said.
He said it is time to take these issues back to the electorate of eThekwini and need to reinvigorate the council because things are not working at the moment, causing misery to communities across the metro.
Councillor Thabani Mthethwa – DA eThekwini Caucus Leader, said it cannot be business as usual in eThekwini as there is not a single service delivery unit that is functional.
Mthethwa highlighted the collapse of the city’s service delivery collapse. and said that the DA, having consulted widely, feel that the best solution would be to doissolve the council, and to give eThekwini the opportunity to elect a new government and give themselves a fresh start.
