Cape Town – ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has blamed the Democratic Alliance (DA) for the failure of coalition governments, accusing the party of not being a team player.
Speaking during the State of Capital Address in Tshwane, Mashaba said ActionSA’s recent coalitions — formed without the DA — have been more successful, particularly in Tshwane, where ActionSA holds the mayoral position.
“If you look at a common denominator, everywhere coalition collapse is because of the DA. So I think anyone prepared to work with the DA, you must understand that the likelihood of the coalition arrangement collapsing is very high,” IOL quoted Mashaba as saying.
Despite previously refusing to work with the ANC, Mashaba has shifted his stance. ActionSA is now in coalition with the ANC in Gauteng’s three major metros: Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni.
Last week, Mashaba said that if invited to join the Government of National Unity (GNU), his party would negotiate in the best interests of South Africans.
“In fact, from the ANC point of view, if you look at the vitriol, the disrespect and the insults that the DA has unleashed against the ANC in the last few days, I cannot understand honestly for the life of me how the president and members of the ANC will accept to work with such a party. It’s beyond me, but it’s up to the ANC, if they want to work with the DA, let them continue.”
ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip also indicated that the party might reconsider joining the GNU if the DA exits.
