Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to assist police fight crime and maintain law and order in the country until September 13, a report says.
According to SABC, Ramaphosa said the extension will affect 10 000 soldiers and will amount to nearly R255 million.
Ramaphosa initially authorised the deployment of 25 000 troops from July 12 to August 12.
The SANDF members were deployed last month to areas that were affected by violence and looting sparked by the jailing of ex-president Jacob Zuma.
They were deployed to assist law enforcement agencies, particularly in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces to quell the unrest.
