Cape Town – South Africa’s first black billionaire, Patrice Motsepe, reportedly made the most generous donations to South Africa’s major political parties in the past quarter.
An Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) report released on Tuesday showed that Motsepe’s African Rainbow Minerals and Harmony Gold, paid millions of rands to the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Vryheidsfront Plus commonly known as Freedom Front Plus.
Harmony Gold donated R5 853 969 to the ANC between October 5 and October 19.
The DA, on the other hand, received funds from both African Rainbow and Harmony Gold. Both companies paid R2 115 019 each.

The EFF received two payments totaling R1 099 088 from both companies, while the IFP received two payments totaling R343 794 from both companies as well.
FF Plus received the least, with two payments of R242 219.
According to Sunday Times, the declaration of the amount received by political parties from donors follows the 2018 Political Party Funding Act, which requires all registered political parties to disclose to the IEC donations exceeding the R100 000 threshold.
Motsepe recently splashed his money on a 28-hectare farm situated on the northern slopes of the Helderberg Mountains in Stellenbosch.
The farm was initially listed for sale at R160 million but was acquired for between R100 million and R120 million in cash, City Press reported.
Motsepe reportedly paid more for the property than former owner Riaan Stassen – founder of Capitec – did in 2015 when the property was first purchased.
