Cape Town — ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said at the launch of the new National Results Operation Centre that the time for a coalition government has arrived.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) opened the new centre this week for the 2024 general elections at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. It will be responsible for all elections-related activities for the entire duration of the elections.
Many high-profile party leaders were in attendance, including BuildOne South Africa (BOSA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, expelled party leader of the MK Party, Jabulani Khumalo, and Herman Mashaba.
Speaking to EWN, Mashaba said the event is a historic one and will determine the future of the country. He was asked about coalitions and the multi-arty charter.
“Coming to the coalition, unfortunately South Africa has entered an era of coalitions, and I say unfortunate because no political party in the world would want to go into a coalition. A coalition is a result of the electoral outcome, and South Africans have had enough, and that’s why they’ve decided coalitions are the order of the day, and ActionSA have embraced that.” Mashaba said.
He said one-party rule is not good for any nation and urged political parties to stay humble and have mutual respect for others in order for a coalition to work. Mashaba also said the party would be happy to work with any other party outside the MPC, except the ANC, EFF and MK.
According to The Citizen, Mashaba has drawn up a list of names that should be investigated and prosecuted, should the party come into power. Mashaba also said he would reform across the machinations of government – and that includes the nation’s state-owned enterprises.
“In no particular order, these individuals include [former ANC secretary-general] Ace Magashule, [businessman] Edwin Sodi, [Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president] Floyd Shivambu, [Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy] Gwede Mantashe, [EFF leader] Julius Malema, [former president] Jacob Zuma, [former finance minister] Malusi Gigaba, [ANC first deputy secretary-general] Nomvula Mokonyane, [former eThekwini mayor] Zandile Gumede and [former health minister] Zweli Mkhize.” Mashaba said.
