Cape Town — President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to meet with the leaders of the Government of National Unity (GNU) before he announces his new Cabinet, Democratic Alliance (DA).
Ramaphosa was sworn-in as president on Wednesday and has now officially begun his second term as leader of South Africa.
With his inauguration now complete, attention now shifts to the cabinet.
The president said that parties of the GNU have decided to work together to address the country’s most pressing needs, which include selecting competent ministers to take the country forward and signal the seriousness of shaping the GNU.
According to, The Citizen, former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon said that Ramaphosa should consult with GNU members as per their agreement.
“I haven’t actually heard anything (about cabinet positions). I certainly know the DA has applied its mind as to where it could make an impact on both the governance and economic front. But once again, and this is quite clear in the constitution, the president will appoint the members in the cabinet. But in terms of this [GNU] agreement, he’s got to do so in consultation with the leaders of the parties making up the GNU,” the report quoted Leon as saying.

Reports suggested that the DA will get six ministerial positions and four deputies in the GNU, including the position of leader of the government business, a position Steenhuisne has had his eye on. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) will get two ministerial positions and possibly one deputy minister’s position.
“We’ve got an array of complexities this time around in that what the president often does, he will consult with leaders of the alliance, leaders of the governing party; this time around he has to consult even more broadly,” he said.
