Cape Town — The African National Congress Veterans League (ANCVL) remains upbeat over the ongoing negotiations, as the country heads towards a Government of National Unity (GNU).
The ANC is currently in the midst of negotiating with opposition parties to come to an agreement of the future of the country. The Democratic Alliance (DA), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) are among the opposition parties who were invited to discussions with the ANC.
ANCVL president, Snuki Zikalala, was among those who expressed confidence in the ongoing negotiations, but believed that the parties indecision to take disciplinary measures against former president, Jacob Zuma, ultimately cost the party from getting an outright majority at the elections, The Citizen reported.
Zikalala said the league supported last week’s outcome of the party’s national executive committee meeting, which endorsed a resolution for the formation of the GNU to govern South Africa for the next five years.
“We regret having lost 17% of our votes, mainly taken by the MK party – something we never saw coming. At the same time, we are saying people of South Africa have spoken against the ANC’s failure to address basic issues like service delivery and corruption.” he said.
Zikalala added that the ANCVL supports the GNU and the party hopes that all parties can come together to reach the common goal.

According to IOL, the ANCVL expressed concern over whether any engagement with the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will be worthwhile. Zikalala feels the two parties do not meet the criteria the ANC has set out to from the GNU, and the party remains skeptical of the MK and EFF.
“… MK because they are saying they do not recognise the Constitution, they are unreliable, some of them are using state capture money, but the ANC NEC said let’s approach them, let’s talk to them.” he said.
