Cape Town — The African National Congress (ANC) is set to table a motion in the National Assembly (NA) to debate a proposed salary increase for President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The motion is set to be heard in the National Assembly next week. The ANC has argued that Ramaphosa has not received a salary increase since 2018 when he first became president, EWN reported.
While it is unclear how much of a salary hike is set to be proposed, the National Treasury budgeted R4.2 million for his salary in the financial year. However, the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers only recommended a 2.5% increase for all office bearers, including Ramaphosa.
It was recommended that he only be paid R3.3 million. The ANC’s Deputy Chief Whip, Doris Dlakude, said it has not been too long since the President received a pay raise, while the ANC’s Programme Whip, Cameron Dugmore, said a motion will be tabled on Tuesday.
“Members will have the opportunity to make declarations and to oppose the motion or to support it in whichever way,” Dugmore said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary increase? For WHAT? What has he done for marginalized Black South Africans? Poverty, unemployment, and inequality remain the same, if not worse.

According to The Citizen, The House on Tuesday is expected to approve a recommendation from the justice committee for a 2.5% salary increase for judges.
When Ramaphosa took over in 2018, he pledged half of his Presidential salary to a fund managed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation which will direct resources to the many small social projects scattered across the country.
While he now awaits a salary increase, he signed off on a hike for all ministers, deputy ministers MPs, Premiers and DPLs to receive salary increases just one day before the 29 May general elections.
Deputy President, Paul Mashatile’s salary was increased to R3.16 million, Cabinet Minister received R2.69 per year, Deputy Ministers received R2.2 million, while opposition leaders also received increases.
