Cape Town — The African National Congress (ANC) said it had no choice but to suspend Mpumalamga provincial treasurer, Mandla Mibi, ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The ANC’s provincial secretary, Muzi Chirwa, announced Msibi has been suspended for three years following his efforts to disrupt the January 8 Statement rally that was delivered by president Cyril Ramaphosa. Chirwa added that two years were suspended provided he does not commit the same offence again, IOL reported.
Msibi is the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in Mpumalanga. He was forced to step aside in 2021 after he was chraged with murder while still working as the MEC for Public Works. He was removed from the position. After the charges were withdrawn, he was re-appointed in the provincial Cabinet in 2022 to head Cogta.

According to EWN, Msibi was not the only one to face the music with the ANC. Msibi’s chief of staff, Sibusiso Mdluli, was expelled with immediate effect after he was found guilty of threatening party members on social media, and Mandla Mahlanga, was also suspended following the sabotage allegations.
Msibi’s suspension comes as the ANC and other parties are ramping up campaigns ahead of a massive showdown at the polls.
According to provincial spokesperson Sasakane Manzini, the party had a clear programme outlined to fend off competition from growing competitors, namely Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.
“We are focusing on that, making sure how far have we delivered on our manifesto, and also what are we going to do in the next five years, that’s what we are focusing on, not focusing on many political parties; there are many.” he said.
