Johannesburg – The African National Congress (ANC) National Working Committee (NWC) has decided to press the reset button on the Government of National Unity (GNU) following disagreements over the national budget, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced on Tuesday.
Mbalula confirmed that the NWC will engage in further consultations regarding the participation of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the GNU.
“The NWC has resolved that we will reset the button to engage with all political parties in the GNU, as well as those that are not in the GNU, to address the impasse with regards to the budget,” Mbalula said.

The budget impasse has underscored growing tensions among GNU partners, with the ANC emphasising the need for cohesion in governance.
The ANC acknowledged political parties that prioritised national interest over partisanship during deliberations on the Fiscal Framework, singling out ActionSA for demonstrating “maturity and patriotism.”
The latest developments follow mounting uncertainty over the unity government’s stability, as tensions between the ANC and DA have surfaced over key policy issues.
Mbalula criticised the DA for its conduct in the GNU, accusing it of bad faith negotiations, attempting to divide government, and acting as an opposition force.
