Cape Town – The African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its former secretary general, Ace Magashule, after finding him guilty of misconduct.
Magashule failed to make submissions defending himself against the expulsion and did not apologise to party president Cyril Ramaphosa for his attempts to suspend him.
The ANC in May gave Magashule seven days to make presentations as to why he should not be expelled from the governing party but he failed to do so.
“After a guilty verdict by the NDC (National Disciplinary Committee) Comrade Ace Magashule was allowed to show cause why he should not be expelled from the ANC. Upon the lapse of seven (7) days, the NDC had not received any representation to that effect.
“Consequently, the NDC confirmed the expulsion of comrade Ace Magashule from the ANC as a final decision,” the ANC said in a statement on Monday.
In 2021, Magashule was suspended from the ruling party due to corruption charges and was later required to step aside according to the party’s new rules for members facing serious charges.

Magashule had led a bitter battle against Ramaphosa before his suspension as secretary-general.
He refused to apologise to Ramaphosa and was found guilty of misconduct and violating the ANC’s constitution.
