Cape Town — African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, said the most likely trajectory for the party is to support a Government of National Unity (GNU).
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has met to discuss a way forward for the country after the ANC failed to win a majority vote in the general elections. The ANC decided a GNU would be the best way forward. This would see every political party represented in the National Assembly being invited to form part of the executive, EWN reported.
“We have narrowed it down to GNU, where we’ll invite everybody. So, we have not confined ourselves to the identity of a party because another political party may say they are not interested.” Mbalula said.
Speculation grew that the party could possibly enter a coalition with leading opposition rivals, the Democratic Alliance (DA), Patriotic Alliance (PA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) or the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
But after negotiations with multiple parties, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula seemingly knows the organisation’s preferred coalition arrangement.
The ANC is driven by the imperative to maintain national unity, stability and to put in place a government that will move with speed to tackle all the pressing socio-economic challenges our nation faces.
