Cape Town — The African National Congress (ANC) expressed its concern to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) after its candidate lists allegedly started circulating on social media.
The IEC set a deadline of 5pm on Friday 8 March for parties to submit its candidate lists and the ANC revealed it disqualified four members who were implicated in the State Capture report from its candidate lists as the party prepares to launch its election campaign.
According to ANC spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, the party’s concern stemmed from the reports that its candidate lists from the IEC’s online candidate nomination system started spreading on social media.

“We have conveyed our concerns to the IEC about this unauthorised release of personal information in potential contravention of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).” she said.
“We wish to reiterate our full confidence in the IEC’s proven track record of adminstering and voerseeing free, fair and credible elections over the past three decades. The IEC continues to do so with professionalism, impartiality and integrity, attributes that have also extended to the secure management of confidential information.” she added.
The ANC said it supports the IEC in any efforts it will pursue to investigate the unauthorised release and will hold anyone responsible to account.
