Johannesburg – Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s authority has been reduced, as the ANC reconfigures the province’s leadership after a poor performance in the 2024 elections.
A newly appointed task team will now govern the province, with Lesufi as a co-convenor alongside ANC veteran Amos Masondo. Other key members include Notombi Mekgwe, Hope Papo, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, and Tasneem Motara.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said during a media conference that the restructuring is not punitive but aims to strengthen the party’s effectiveness in Gauteng, a historically and politically significant province.
The newly reconfigured ANC Gauteng Provincial Task Team is constituted as follows:
Provincial Convenor: Amos Masondo
Co-Provincial Convenor: Panyaza Lesufi
Deputy Provincial Convenor: Ntombi Mekgwe
Provincial Coordinator: Hope Papo
Provincial Deputy Coordinator: Nomantu… pic.twitter.com/InOG9tpsrT— ANC SECRETARY GENERAL | Fikile Mbalula (@MbalulaFikile) February 26, 2025
“Preparations for the 2026 local government elections will be a key focus with the objective of recovering lost ground and ensuring the ANC remains at the centre of government.”
Lesufi publicly welcomed the changes, calling them an opportunity to expand his capabilities.
Despite past speculation of tensions between him and Mbalula, the ANC has affirmed its confidence in his leadership.
