Cape Town — DA’s Alan Winde has been re-elected as the Western Cape’s premier for a second term after he received 26 of the 42 votes.
Winde edged out the African National Congress’s (ANC) Muhamad Khaled Sayed, who received 14 of the votes, while a further 2 were spoilt.
Winde was re-elected on Thursday morning in a quick and incident-free meeting. He thanked the chamber for his re-election and promised to continue to serve the citizens of the Western Cape, EWN reported.
“It is an absolute honour and privilege to receive the majority vote in this very house and for that I say to all of the members thank you very much and I don’t take this lightly. It is a privilege but it is also an honour to take this position into this next term on behalf of the citizens of this province,” he said.

Winde was among new and old MPLs, who took their oath to serve the public. The first sitting saw the election of the province’s new Premier, Speaker and Deputy Speaker. His re-election was followed by the appointment of the DA’s Daylin Mitchell as Speaker, and Reagan Allen — who was MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety — was appointed Deputy Speaker, Daily Maverick reported.
Among the other members sworn in was Grant Marais as a representative of the Freedom Front Plus, Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis and former member Cameron Dugmore who is now headed to the National Assembly.
