Cape Town – A 41-year-old Congolese man accused of assaulting and torturing patrons at Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria has pleaded for bail, citing financial hardship for his family.
Facing multiple charges, including eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, he claimed innocence and alleges police brutality, The Citizen reported.
He formally applied for bail in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday, offering R3,000 and pledging to comply with conditions.

“I was surprised by the allegations which were made against me,” said the suspect in his bail application affidavit, according to Times Live.
He claimed to have strong ties to South Africa, holding a valid asylum seeker visa but no passport. He denied any intention to leave the country, citing family and financial responsibilities.
He alleged police brutality during his arrest, including waterboarding and the disappearance of R8,000 in cash.
The state opposed bail, arguing he was a flight risk, a danger to the community, and at risk himself due to public outrage.
The case was postponed to April 3 for further arguments and a possible ruling.
