Cape Town – The 2023 National Women’s Day Commemoration, initially planned for Khayelitsha, Cape Town, will now be held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Wednesday due to an ongoing taxi strike and security concerns in Khayelitsha.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, as the custodian of National Days, made the announcement on Tuesday.
The change has been “necessitated by the ongoing taxi strike in Cape Town” and that Khayelitsha has been “deemed a high-security risk area”, the department said in a statement.
The event will feature a symbolic walk from Sammy Marks to the Union Buildings, followed by a formal programme including a keynote address by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities leads the Women’s Day commemorations.
