Durban — A female passenger tragically lost her life at King Shaka International Airport on Friday evening, shortly before boarding a FlySafair flight to Johannesburg.
According to a statement released by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the airport’s call centre received an emergency request at 8:35 pm after bystanders observed the woman struggling to breathe at Gate A12. The tragic event occurred just before the passenger was to board FlySafair flight FA279 to Johannesburg.
A passenger services agent arrived at the scene five minutes later, finding the woman unresponsive. Paramedics reached the site at 8:49 pm and administered advanced life support. Despite their efforts, the woman was declared dead at the scene, TimesLIVE reported.
“The cause of death is still unknown; however, we can confirm that the matter has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS),” ACSA said in a statement. Tshililo Manenzhe, ACSA’s media director, reiterated this, noting the timeline of events and the prompt response from emergency services.
“Despite all efforts, the traveller was unfortunately declared deceased on the scene. We extend our deepest condolences to the traveller’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Manenzhe added.
ACSA’s statement emphasized the quick response from their emergency teams but acknowledged the unknown cause of death, which is now under police investigation.
