Cape Town – A Pakistani woman reportedly died after allegedly inhaling poisonous fumes from generator during load shedding.
Reports said that the woman and three family members were found unconscious by neighbours at their Johannesburg home on Wednesday morning.
According to Dr Khalid M Mirza from Overseas Pakistanis Advisory Council, the incident was being investigated by the police.
“I would like to inform you with profound sadness that a family of Pakistani origin in Johannesburg, have lost their member, due to what appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning and the other 3 members are in a critical condition, struggling for their lives in intensive care unit in a private hospital.
“According to reports, during load shedding last night, unfortunately the family fell asleep leaving their generator on in a garage with closed doors,” The Citizen quoted Mirza as saying.
Mirza sent his condolences to the family and encouraged residents to have a dedicated generator room away from living areas to avoid such tragedy, the report said.

South Africans have come up with alternative ways to keep the lights on, as the country continues to battle electricity woes.
Eskom recently announced that it will continue to implement various stages of load shedding until Monday.
The power utility had initially planned to implement stage 2 of the rolling blackouts from 16:00 until 00:00 between Monday and Wednesday. However, breakdowns at five of its power stations, prompted the implementation of stage 3.
Stage 3 load shedding will be suspended on Friday, October 21, 2022 –then rolling blackouts will be implemented again at 16:00 until Saturday morning at 05:00.
“Stage 3 load shedding will again be implemented starting at 16:00 on Friday until 05:00 on Saturday morning. Stage 2 load shedding will then be implemented from 05:00 Saturday morning until 05:00 on Monday morning,” said Eskom.
