Johannesburg — Following the tragic shooting incident in Braamfontein where a University of Johannesburg (UJ) student was among three killed, Wits University have beefed up campus security.
The university’s Campus Protection Services (CPS) appointed a team to liaise and work alongside the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the South African Police Services (SAPS) and Braamfontein Improvement District to work together to increase security in the area.
“In the immediate vicinity, additional vehicles have been deployed to both the Braamfontein and Parktown campuses, and additional guards have been posted at the Jan Smuts Avenue, Jorissen and Yale Road entrances. In Parktown, additional security has been deployed at Blackwood Avenue, St Andrews Road and the Wits Junction residence complex,” CPS said in a statement.
“The team also has access to cameras along the perimeter of the university, and will collate and analyse crime statistics to better deploy resources collectively.”
CPS said safety awareness campaigns were underway to ensure students remain extra vigilant.
