Cape Town – Western Cape police have arrested two suspects in possession of abalone with an estimated street value of R1.4m on the R43 on Friday.
The suspects aged 23 and 29 are expected to appear in the Bellville and Hermanus magistrate’s court soon, the police said.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi police were conducting vehicle check point on the R43 between Gansbaai and Stanford when they came across a suspicious minibus.
“They stopped a suspicious minibus taxi and searched the vehicle, confiscating 3,608 units of abalone with an estimated street value of R1.4m. The suspects were charged with possession of abalone without the necessary documentation,” said Swartbooi.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, in another incident, police followed up on a tip-off and searched premises in Pinedene Street and confiscated mandrax tablets, methamphetamine, and a 9mm pistol with ammunition, said Swartbooi.
“They arrested and detained an 18 year old male on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of drugs.” he said.
All three suspects will appear in the Bellville and Hermanus magistrate’s courts respectively.
