Cape Town – Werner de Jager, the murder accused in the case involving the killing of his wife Liezel, a senior pastor at NG Suidkus church in Amanzimtoti, reportedly passed away on Monday.
De Jager had been hospitalised since April 5th, Times Live reported.
“[He died] in hospital after complications,” the report quoted Correctional services department spokesperson Thulani Mdluli as saying.
His bail request was previously denied by Amanzimtoti magistrate Zama Nyuswa in February, citing concerns of potential interference with witnesses if released.
Liezel’s body was discovered in Athlone Park shortly after her morning jog in October 2021, with the couple residing together with their young children.
According to The Citizen, Ian Cameron, affiliated with Action Society during the time of Liezel’s murder, also disclosed reports of Werner’s alleged passing.
“Werner De Jager, accused of and awaiting trial for the premeditated murder of his wife, Liezel De Jager almost two and a half years ago has died of an alleged overdose in the correctional facility where he was held in Durban, KZN.
“If he did plan to take his own life, he took a coward’s way out. There are still so many questions that need to be answered. It is very unfair,” Cameron told Netwerk24., according to the report.
