Cape Town – Videos of KwaZulu Natal residents looting a Shoprite Usave shop and other supermarkets have emerged on social media.
This comes as the province is still trying to recover from the devastating floods that wrecked homes and were described by President Cyril ramaphosa as a “catastrophe”.
Reports indicated on Thursday that the death toll from the “unprecedented” floods climbed to 341 as helicopters fanned out across the southeastern city of Durban in an increasingly desperate search for survivors.
According to The Citizen, some people, unfortunately, decided to take the opportunity to loot shops.

The report quoted police spokesperson in KZN Nqobile Gwala as saying that the lootings took place around 21:00 at Umlazi H and J sections on Wednesday.
At least 12 suspects were arrested, said Gwala, adding that some of the stolen groceries were recovered by police and handed back to the store manager.
IOL said incidents of looting were also reported at a Pep Stores depot and other warehouses.
