Cape Town – A video in which the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema calls for the National Assembly building in Cape Town to be sold and for parliament to be moved to Pretoria has resurfaced on social media.
The video is from 2019.
“…EFF says parliament must relocate from Cape Town to Pretoria, why?.. because minister offices are in Pretoria. That’s what other countries are doing. Both administration and legislature are under the same city. In that way you save resources, we sell that parliament we take the proceeds of that parliament and build a proper parliament,” Malema says in the video.

The resurfacing of the video follows a fire that broke out in the oldest wing of the parliament complex earlier this week.
The EFF has maintained its stance, and continues to call for parliament to be moved to Pretoria.
In a statement this week, the party said the funds that would be used to repair the damage to parliament should be channelled to relocating it to Pretoria.

“In terms of costs, the continued location of Parliament in Cape Town is a waste of taxpayers’ money. It results in unnecessary expenditure on both travel and accommodation for parliamentarians and members of cabinet.
“The EFF therefore calls for any money which would be set aside for repairs of what seems like irreversible damage, unless there is large-scale construction, to be used to relocate Parliament to Tshwane where the Union Buildings reside,” said the EFF.
