Cape Town – A scammer was caught on video in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, allegedly faking a disability to obtain financial aid from motorists and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
Footage obtained by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) shows the man using crutches to solicit money at an intersection but later walking away without them, raising concerns about the integrity of the disability grant system.
A whistleblower, reportedly a relative of the scammer, claimed he was “fit and able”.
“The complainant informed Reaction Officers that he was related to man who was claiming disability grant & collecting monies from motorists at intersection of Russom/Todd Street in the Verulam CBD.
“He added that the man was fit & able, defrauding the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) & using the money to purchase drugs,” Rusa said.
To qualify for SASSA’s disability grant, applicants must meet specific criteria, including having a severe disability that renders them unable to work for over six months.
