Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of the Pact of the Future as a chance to reform global governance, particularly the United Nations.
Ramahosa was speaking during the High-Level Summit of the Future in New York on Sunday.
He argued that the current structure of the UN Security Council is inadequate for addressing modern challenges, saying that it fails to represent the diverse voices of all countries.
“Placing the fate of the world’s security in the hands of a select few when it is the vast majority who bear the brunt of these threats is unjust, unfair and unsustainable.
Through this Summit of the Future, we must therefore forge global consensus on the causes of these challenges.
We must agree on actions to confront and overcome the threats we all face.

“The UN Security Council as it is currently structured does not represent all and does not consider the voices and viewpoints of all the countries of the world.
“We need to make these institutions more representative of the current membership of the United Nations. We need to make them more inclusive of the diversity of views on this planet,” Ramaphosa said.
He highlighted ongoing global issues like conflict and the need for a unified response, calling for a new agenda for peace that prioritises mediation and political resolutions.
Ramaphosa stressed that international systems must be transformed to benefit all nations, ensuring that no one is left behind.
