Cape Town – Two alleged robbers were reportedly shot dead following an alleged attempted robbery at a mosque in Kensington, Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Reports alleged that two other people, including a police officer, sustained injuries when a second shootout ensued.
At about 21:00 a group of armed men allegedly accosted congregants at a mosques demanding money and valuables, reported The Citizen.
According to police one of the congregants retaliated, fatally wounding two of the three suspects, the report said.
One of the suspects was arrested and police were investigation multiple cases, including two murder cases and attempted business robbery, the report said.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Sello confirmed the incident. IOL.
“While police attended to the crime scene an unknown person or persons started shooting at scene. During this shootout, two people, including a police officer sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to hospital for medical assistance.
“One suspect is arrested and two cases of murder and attempted murder as well as attempted business robbery are opened for further investigations,”IOL quoted Sello as saying.
African News Agency (ANA) photographer described the scene as “absolutely crazy”, the report said.
The photographer alleged that the police officer was shot from behind while making an arrest, the report said.
“That officer was arresting one of these guys and somebody shot him from the back,” the photographer said.
Police urged anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the other suspects to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or anonymously report tip-offs on the MySAPS app.
