Cape Town – The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has requested the public and media to show sensitivity towards the family of Carol Mabunda, a student who died in a stampede on campus.
Mabunda, a second-year student, died during a Fresher’s Bash on May 10.
Allegations on social media suggest security measures contributed to the chaos, with reports of overcrowding and security officers using force.

The university expressed its condolences and is supporting Mabunda’s family, awaiting an official report from the police.
“The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is saddened to announce the untimely passing of Carol Mabunda, a second-year National Diploma: Contact Management student at the Pretoria Campus.
“While we await an official report from the South African Police Services (SAPS), the University is providing the student’s family and friends with as much support as we can at this difficult time.
“The family should be afforded the space and the time to process their great loss, and to honour the memory of the deceased with dignity.
“We call upon the public, including the media, to exercise restraint and sensitivity towards the family at this time of grief,” the university said in a statement.
Criticism has been mounting online, with the hashtag #Justice4CarolMabunda trending, as many accuse TUT of mishandling the situation.
