Cape Town – Five people, including three children, are believed to have been washed away in a canal in Lamontville, near Umlazi, during heavy rainfall in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday night.
Rescue teams, including paramedics, metro police, and fire services, searched the area but called off operations due to dangerous conditions and poor lighting, The Citizen reported.

“Torrential rain and flooding that took place last night has left a trail of destruction. Five people are believed to have been washed into the canal,” the report quoted ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson as saying.
“The search has been called off due to dangerous terrain and lack of lighting. Paramedics, Durban Metro Police and Durban search and rescue teams, together with the eThekwini Fire Department, searched the surrounding area.
“A joint decision was made that all units will return at first light to resume the search for the missing five people.”
Several roads in and around Durban have been affected by flooding as a result of the storm, according to East Coast Radio.

Last week, heavy rains triggered mudslides and structural collapses across KZN, resulting in six fatalities.
The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms, flooding, and damaging winds across various provinces.
