Cape Town – In a time when the cost of living in South Africa has soared, the financial struggles of its citizens have come to the forefront.
Among those facing these challenges is Lucas Moraswi, who recently tugged at the heartstrings of many South Africans through a poignant video he shared online.
In the video, Moraswi was captured at his workplace, sitting down to eat a humble meal of pap without any sishebo, a common accompaniment.
The caption he chose for the post encapsulated the feelings of countless others: “Pain of suffering financially.”
The video quickly went viral, eliciting an outpouring of sympathy, likes, and comments from the online community.
TikTokers from all corners of the nation rallied around Moraswi, offering words of encouragement and sharing their own financial struggles.
Many reassured him that his difficult situation wouldn’t last forever, especially with the support of faith. Others shared their own daily challenges.

One user revealed: “I’m going to work today with nothing to eat, no lunch, nothing, and I have to make a plan to come back with a loaf of bread for my kids.”
Another heart-wrenching comment read: “At least you have got pap. For me, it’s been a week of sleeping and spending the day without anything to eat with my kids. I don’t know what to do or where to start.”
Yet another user shared the grim reality faced by many, saying: “Everyone is struggling. I eat once a day, and it is with dinner. Times are tough. As long as the kids have lunch, we continue.”
Amid these tales of hardship, one TikToker recounted a story of hope. She described how her life took a turn for the better when her boss noticed her difficult circumstances. “I used to go to work with nothing, and when other workers were eating, I would continue with my work and always said that I was on a diet until one of our bosses saw me, and it all changed,” she wrote.
Moraswi, visibly moved by the support he received, responded to the TikToker who shared her story of improvement, saying: “I so wish things could change on my side as well,” accompanied by crying face emojis.
