Cape Town – The Gauteng department of health has confirmed the arrest of a fake doctor, Matthew Lani, who was apprehended at Helen Joseph Hospital.
Lani was caught entering the facility in disguise, wearing a hoodie, a surgical mask, and a stethoscope around his neck, the department said in a statement on Sunday.
“He was apprehended while entering the main entrance of the facility. Lani was caught just before 8pm disguised in a hoodie and wearing a surgical mask with a stethoscope around his neck. He had previously entered the same facility to curate misleading content under the pretense that he was a qualified doctor,” said department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba.

“Immediately after being apprehended, Lani requested to go to the bathroom only to attempt to escape by jumping through the bathroom window. When the security realised that he was making a run for it, they called for reinforcement, and he was subsequently apprehended again.”
A video of his arrest has gone viral on TikTok, where he had posed as a doctor for several years.

Lani vociferously denies allegations of attempting to escape and expresses his frustration by shouting at the security guards to vacate the room where he is being apprehended.
During this encounter, a security guard confronts him with a stethoscope, asserting that it belongs to him. Lani, who consistently featured a stethoscope in his videos, vehemently refutes the claim, insisting that the device is not his.
He has been handed over to the police for an official arrest.
