Cape Town – African National Congress (ANC) member of parliament Sibusiso Kula reportedly appeared at the Orkney Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder of his wife, Jennifer Kula.
The 31-year-old woman was found in a pool of blood, stabbed to death at their marital home in Kanana, North West on November 27 last year.
Her husband was arrested on January 20 nearly two months after the gruesome murder.
IOL reported that once news of the woman’s murder got out, family and friends allegedly pointed to the husband as the suspect.
The report said before the woman was found dead, she had posted on social media about GBV.
“GBV is real, if I wake up killed or any of my family members pls don’t look far,” her post reportedly read.
The family of the deceased alleged that Kula abused Jennifer and their children for the duration of their eleven years of marriage, reported News24.
“Their marriage was a mess. He was a pit bull biting his wife and children. He doesn’t love peace. He is very arrogant. Kula abused them all. He didn’t choose whether his kids were minors or not. Kula used to beat her until she bled. She was carrying scars on her body from the constant assault,” the report quoted Jennifer’s sister, Mamphontsheng Mohlomi as saying.
She said the court was their last hope as Kula was never arrested for assaulting her sister or violating any of the many protections orders, the report said.
“Jennifer had obtained many protection orders against him. Due to his stature in the country, he easily violated those protection orders. He has money and power and used both to overpower my sister,” Mohlomi was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, outside the court, ANC and EFF members protested, demanding that the court grants no bail, EWN reported.
ANC North West spokesperson Tumelo Maruping said they hoped that the court and the police would investigate the matter and justice is served for Jennifer.
Asked about the party’s step-aside policy, he said: “It goes without saying, he’s already been charged. As the ANC, we expect him to voluntarily step aside. If he does not do so, as because he is still in custody, we will institute section 25 of the ANC which will put him aside.”
Kula remained in custody until his bail hearing on January 27, the report said.
