Cape Town – DA leader John Steenhuisen says he’s committed to making coalitions work, as he focuses on defeating the ANC in the 2024 national elections.
Steenhuisen retained his position as leader of the DA at the party’s federal congress held on 1 and 2 April at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand.
In his acceptance speech, he made it known that the party’s mission was to vote the ANC out and block the EFF.
“Given the fact that the ANC now officially co-governs with the EFF in parts of Gauteng, we need to start taking the threat of these parties ganging up to destroy our country in 2024 very, very seriously.” he said.
He said the party will make it its number one priority to prevent an ANC-EFF doomsday coalition from taking over, reported City Press.
“The cold, hard truth is that the doomsday coalition between the ANC and EFF has already taken over Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, with the help of its little proxies.” the report quoted Steenhuisen as saying.
During an interview with EWN, Steenhuisen said he intended to make coalitions work.
“… By far, the majority of coalitions in this country work well, and deliver governance in places like George…. So don’t write all coalitions off with what you are seeing happening in metros.
“… We have to do something different to what we have in terms of the ANC paradigm. And that is why I am committed to making coalitions work. Of course, I want my own majority and if you look where the DA has got its own majority, governance is top-class,” said Steenhuisen.
He added: “If we have to have a coalition we need to have more maturity, focusing on reducing petty squabbles and focus on servicing the residents and making sure we demonstrate the alternative going forward.”
